LO Awards – Private Residential Design & Residential Construction Submission

We submitted the design & subsequent landscaping of this two-story, brick façade house in Oakville for consideration for a couple of LO Awards of Excellence: Private Residential Design – 2500 to 5000sq. ft.; and Residential Construction – $50,000 to $100,000.

## Project Summary:
This modern patio and custom pergola woke up this Oakville backyard with its features. A remote powered retractable awning and this unique combination of pavers that simulate a wooden floor under the pergola and sitting area, make this a cozy and conversational scene for lounging and dining.

This family residence is located in Oakville, ON. This two storey brick façade house was recently acquired by an expanding family looking for a larger property.

Their main focus for landscaping was the backyard since they love to spend time outdoors entertaining and playing with their young children.

### The homeowner’s wish list for their new landscape includes:

– A contemporary style landscape design
– Space for dining and entertaining
– Pergola to provide a shaded sitting area
– Lawn area for the kids to play
– Trees to provide multi-seasonal interest
– Small herb garden
– Low maintenance shrubs and perennials to add all season colour

### A landscape design was achieved by:

– Creating a contemporary style design which incorporates the style and architecture of the house to the structures and materials in the landscape.
– A spacious patio was added serving as the main dining and entertainment area.
– A wooden pergola was added with a retractable canvas awning to provide shade and style, no matter what hour of the day.
– Lawn area was installed directly out the back door providing a large space for the kids to play.
– Trees such as red maple, pear and magnolia were used for their spring and fall colour along the back fence line.
– A small herb garden was added adjacent to the dining area and built as a raised bed to keep it separate from the shrub border along the fence line.
– Low maintenance shrubs and perennials were chosen for this design offering year round interest such as cedars, hydrangeas, daylilies and geraniums.
